Featured Work: American Mission Campaigns- Knoxville Begins!

On Saturday, June 23, HTHSOE began the second American Mission Campaign of the year in Knoxville, Tennessee. This campaign is a cooperative effort of the Karns (hosting) and Westend churches of Christ. Conducting these large mission campaigns in foreign countries is common and well supported. Conducting these in our nation is almost unheard of and often met with skepticism. If we are going to reverse the growth decline of the church of Christ in America, however, we need to learn how to successfully conduct these campaigns and multiply them all across this land.

We began the campaign on Sunday with crowds in excess of 425 on Sunday morning and 350 on Sunday evening. In the afternoon, more than 150 Christians took to the streets to knock doors, and on Sunday evening we had our first baptism. So far, we have made over 250 contacts. Our evening training seminar had over 250 in attendance. Late night with the youth had some incredible singing, and many stayed for hours to talk about soul winning. The support of this effort has been overwhelming thus far!

We are thankful to report that attitudes are beginning to change, and support is building. The numbers so far are consistent with the past two AMC campaigns, thus creating a baseline for the future, and we will report final numbers next week. Please continue to pray for this mission effort. It has the potential to create a wave throughout the kingdom that will influence change in our culture and help us to become an evangelistic people once again.

Congregational Reports
North Meadville church of Christ, Pennsylvania: Bryon Shultz (preacher) reports, “We are meeting, organizing, and creating a congregational plan based on the HTHSOE model and training materials. Please pray for us. We had a baptism on Saturday. Christopher Smith.  Dick and Lisa studied with him, and Dick baptized him in their pond. He lives in Hershey PA, so we are trying to contact a congregation over there to follow up with him.”

York church of Christ, York Pennsylvania:  Fred Nowell (preacher) reports, “We had a meeting with the elders and Mark our Deacon of evangelism. Mark filled in for me this Sunday and his lesson was a recap of the need to work together as individual members of the Body. We also encouraged each member to work on their contract lists. We have a measure of excitement and are confident that the tools and teaching brought to us is going to strengthen many and bring souls to Christ.

Sunrush church of Christ, Chilliclothe, Ohio: Jeryl Webb (deacon) reports, “The Sunrush Church of Christ continues to build motivation as we take advantage of the tools available on the evangelism table to reach the lost. Members are receiving their bookmarks and have been encouraged to pray for those contacts as they seek to reach them. One of our members, David Tennant, is moving with his family to Hampstead, North Carolina, and we are giving them the tools to evangelize in that area of the country. Please pray for David and his family as they relocate.”

Covington church of Christ, Tennessee: Wayne Dalrymple (elder) reports, “It has been another good week for the church in Covington. We rejoice that Addison Vujicic was baptized into Christ last week while at Midsouth Youth Camp. Addison is the daughter of members here. On Saturday, eight of us left Covington to go to Dry Ridge, Kentucky, to help them with door knocking and conducting their evangelistic VBS. Another person joined us Monday. We are having good attendance so far. We had 49 Sunday night and 73 Monday night at a church that has less than 50 members! We will continue through Wednesday. Please pray for this church. It was planted by the Lehman Avenue church in Bowling Green, Kentucky, in 2007. We still have several studies going as well. Please pray for them. God is truly blessing this church.”

Parkway church of Christ, Kentucky: Will Hester (preacher) reports, “On Sunday, we were given six contact cards of fallen members. We will set up our compassion card teams this week and begin the card writing process. We have been given a wonderful opportunity to hand out backpacks to local school kids, so we will use this opportunity to reach the parents by placing material into the backpacks for them. We also have a mission team in Alabama helping to conduct a VBS and outreach for a church down there; this is our second mission trip this summer! The tools that HTH/HTHSOE gave us are being utilized through these new efforts. We are praying for open hearts and open minds to receive the Good News!”

Greenfield church of Christ, Tennessee: Clint Monroe (elder) reports, “Our evangelism table and Back to the Bible table are finished! In our evangelism meeting, we continued our discussion on our group alignment. We also talked about a couple of Bible studies that will be starting in the next couple of weeks and potential contacts we intend to reach. Brent’s sermons today focused on the first part of the Back to the Bible study. Our plans are to meet with group leaders to discuss compassion cards. Efforts are to set up a room for outreach materials (compassion cards. visitor bags, and new movers’ baskets.”

Fayette church of Christ, Alabama: Kaleb Hall (preacher) reports, “We finished book 3 of BTTB Sunday. Feedback has been positive! We are on week 3 of prospecting our 28 contacts and have had great feedback by cards, social media, and in person. Follow-ups will begin after this week.”

Chesapeake church of Christ, Virginia: Ernest Benjamin (preacher) reports, “Joshua was baptized into Christ on Sunday morning. I started teaching the seven principles of evangelism this past Sunday morning as well. We began class by pulling out our contact bookmarks and having a moment of silence as we focused and prayed individually for our prospects followed by a congregational prayer on behalf of our evangelistic efforts. I conducted lesson 2 of BTTB with William Buchanan.”

Honolulu church of Christ, Hawaii: Tagiilima Esene (preacher) reports, “Aloha from the Honolulu congregation! This past week we were able to schedule a Bible study with one of our prospects. Please keep this study in your prayers this week. We have one visitor who has been attending for the past three weeks who really appreciated the cards we sent. This week Lima will be meeting with them with the goal to conduct a Bible study. Our card ministry is still an ongoing project. We have completed our yearly scheduled list of events with the goal of evangelism in mind. Our Sunday morning sermons continue to focus on how to use the Back to the Bible booklets. We will complete the book one training this coming Sunday, Lord willing. Please continue to remember us in your prayers, and we will do the same.”

Aberdeen church of Christ, Maryland: Will Brown (preacher) reports, “This past week we conducted VBS. One set of parents told us they came to Vacation Bible School because of HTH/HTH mailer. The kids for VBS brought supplies for new movers’ baskets. We now have an opportunity for two Bible studies and have the start of several more baskets. The card team is in place to send cards weekly. Please pray for these efforts.”

Lafayette church of Christ, Georgia: David Paden reports, “I just spent a week at Maywood Christian Camp in Hamilton, Alabama. Our theme for the week was Luke 24, “An Empty Tomb and a Living Hope.” I was blessed to teach ninth and tenth graders twice each day. Normally when I am at camp, I teach our theme chapter in first class, and then I do questions and answers in the second class. This year I decided to teach them how to use Back to the Bible. Following the third lesson, five people asked me for further study. Those five studies resulted in five baptisms. Please pray for their faithfulness as they return home.”

New Hope church of Christ, Middleton, Tennessee: Cole Wade (preacher) reports, “This week, we are having our VBS. Last night was our first night, and we were packed. We are expecting more tonight and the coming nights, so pray that we have enough room! We are making several contacts and making sure we shake hands and have conversations with all visitors! Our members are working hard to make New Hope a receptive place where people are welcomed and Bible Studies can be generated. We will document those who visited and prospect them. I can hardly wait to start studies! Send the Lord prayers for our congregation!”

Northern Oaks church of Christ, San Antonio, Texas: Mel Hutzler (elder/preacher) reports, “We had another baptism. Anthony studied with Darris; after completing the booklets, he was baptized Thursday evening, a few days before our Vacation Bible School began. We are so happy that Darris has decided to follow Christ. We have others whom we are prospecting, and we continue to have studies and to send cards. Our Vacation Bible School went very well. I visited with Darris on Sunday. Please keep him in your prayers.”

Highway church of Christ, Benton, Arkansas: Steven Ford (preacher) reports, “The cards are rolling, and we are cultivating prospects. The preachers and elders met tonight and decided to add House to House/Heart to Heart monthly mailers to our efforts. We also secured a copy of Evangelism Visualized for training and role playing for members to get used to using the material. The process is going forward, though it is a bit slower than we had hoped, but we realize this effort takes time.”

Gilt Edge church of Christ, Tennessee: Daniel Dalton (preacher) reports, “Steven and Krystle were baptized into Christ Friday afternoon. We have been studying with them for some time, and Friday they made the decision to obey the gospel!  We, as well as they, are beyond excited!”

Forestview church of Christ, Memphis, Tennessee: Tim Roland (preacher) reports, “Our Encouragement Ministry Team continues to send cards to our visitors. Last week our EMT mailed 104 cards. We have seen 388 visitors attend our Sunday Morning worship services in the past 19 weeks, which is an average of 20 visitors per week. Sunday we welcomed one of our long-term visitors (16 weeks) as she placed membership with us! We are working with several prospects. Hopefully, these will develop into studies! Our future is bright!”

Rogersville church of Christ, Tennessee: Ethan Tate (preacher) reports, “Wonderful news this past week! A brother had left town, but he asked me to continue his study with a man in Abingdon, Virginia, in the Back to the Bibleseries. We had finished book 2 two weeks ago but stopped the study halfway through book 3. This past Friday, we talked to this man about his spiritual condition, and the light bulb turned on. We have a new brother in Christ! The Abingdon congregation had a wonderful time Sunday welcoming their new brother in Christ! It was also a wonderful weekend filled with preparations for VBS this weekend. We have a study scheduled for Tuesday with a young member who has questions about being baptized.  Please pray for this young person and the other Bible studies in progress. It is our prayer that our studies will help the kingdom increase no matter where we are.  We pray that God is doing marvelous works in the kingdom, wherever brethren labor!”

Oak Hill church of Christ, Covington Georgia: Tate Sutton (preacher) reports, “The Lord is blessing us. We have had a Bible study with a married couple, which is a direct result of taking them out to eat and getting to know them. We are also getting ready to reach out more with our new movers’ baskets. Our congregation is getting more and more excited about the work of the Lord.”

Schertz church of Christ, Texas: Jay Stewart (elder) reports, “This was a topsy-turvy week at Schertz. We started with grand plans to welcome John Grubb and his wife Eta under the oversight of our eldership. Unfortunately, they contracted COVID, which interrupted our lessons as well as our fellowship meal with them on Sunday. All was not lost, however; we had a chance to take care of them over the week and came to know them even better. On a brighter note, we were able to study with the man who responded last week after our morning worship. He was not ready last Sunday, but after the study, Brother Crowley baptized him on Saturday!”

Paintsville church of Christ, Kentucky: Zach Collins (preacher) reports, “This week, we sent cards to seven individuals who have either visited us or are dealing with illness. We will be checking on them soon! We are preparing for our first new movers visitation, along with our first community door-knocking campaign. We will focus on knocking doors in the area where we sent our HTH mailing. Please pray for God to give the increase!”

Woodstock church of Christ, Georgia: Greg Garner (deacon) reports, “The compassion cards group wrote 13 cards for three individuals. This group has decided to write 40 cards for the new movers’ baskets and 23 cards for the visitor bags. Our hope is to personalize the baskets and bags, thus giving the receiver a feel of being appreciated and wanted, not just given a gift. Rhonda House has done an outstanding job of thinking outside of the box. She has created the coffee station version of the new movers’ basket, leading to 14 coffee station baskets.  Three of those coffee stations were delivered for a total of 16 baskets.

“We received outstanding feedback on the gifts. Some asked for the church address, and some said they would be happy to visit. We are excited and hopeful to have visitors to the church. Our personal evangelism team has six individuals who are committed to the training and are almost ready to begin Bible studies. Our service group continues to revisit recipients of the new mover baskets to see if they have a need. One lady just wanted to talk more about the church.”

Riverbend church of Christ, Georgia: Austin Fowler (member) reports, “We are continuing our compassion card ministry. Group three met this week. My uncle and I plan to make a follow-up visit with a contact made this week. He has cancer and has been on our list for four weeks. This coming Sunday, I plan to study book 3 of BTTB with Terry Smith, a cousin of one of our elders. We just could not connect until now. Lord willing, study three will happen on Sunday afternoon.”

Corinth church of Christ, Portland, Tennessee: James Parker (elder) reports, “We still are working with several different people! We have not baptized anyone yet, but we have had one restoration! We continue to send cards and taking different welcome baskets to new movers!”

Canal Heights church of Christ, Demopolis, Alabama: Bryan Cook (preacher) reports, “Sunday was a challenge because both elders and the preacher were at home with COVID. Also, one of our most ardent workers in the evangelism program died recently. We decided to delay a week of our schedule. We are seeking a replacement to continue the work our dear Marie had started, and it will be interesting to see who steps up. Each week, several individuals have increased their efforts concerning evangelism. Please continue to pray for our efforts as we pray for all of you.”

NOTE: These reports are from Christians and congregations enrolled in the House to House/Heart to Heart School of Evangelism. These emails are sent to teach and provoke one another to remain focused on the mission of Christ. Each week, we share several reports and highlight one with more details. We hope you enjoy reading them.
